Zenism Aesthetic by Herschel
First, use six words to form a sentence to describe a selfie, which in itself is a very new and creative activity. The person I want to be is to let others feel peace and tranquility through my expression, tone and aura. (Buddhism‘s zen) So I chose this one. But because of the limited level of painting, there is no good expression. But in spite of this, we use a brand-new painting tool --- charco. This is very conducive to the expression of changes in the shadow and light of the picture. And we also use "value change" to use fragile charco dust, cover the surface with a charcoal stick, and then apply it evenly with fingers, plasticine or cotton swabs.
It is also a good way to use grid positioning. We first divide the photo, and then find the position of the facial features on the paper according to the proportions. It is very helpful. The first time my grid was counted wrong, my face changed. It's very strange.
I learned a lot of skills in this assignment. Although only black and white are available, through valua change, you can actually draw any effect you want. it is colorful.

I really, really like insant noodles, by Merlina
Describe how you made this work of art and what you learned through the process.
first, I made the grids as guidelines to help me draw the proportions and positions better. then i covered the whole paper with charcoal. after the paper is covered quite evely, I used the eraser to make the grid. i then started by erasing the parts for highlights, as shown in process photo #1. then i continued adding for depth and shapes to the drawing. i used the white charcoal to add highligts. I learned a lot from this process. substractive shading using charcoal is a completely new technique for me. this artwork could've been better, but I lack the skill to color the indomie and I didn't know that the grid was supposed to be erased XD i also learned to shade better with charcoals and blending stumps.

Daily day during Corona, by HuiSo
First, I made a grid on the paper and the picture. The grid helped me on drawing accurately. Second, I drew a outlines of my body and faces, Third, I drew a glass and details on my cloth. Finally, I drew adetails in my face and hairs with shadings. Then, I darkened parts like my hair and lightened the parts where the light hits.
During the process of making this art work, I learned how to use grid better and accurate. By using the material charcoal for the first time, it was hard but after I finished I learned how charcoal is different from other materials. How it's good on giving dark and white value on the paper.
Drawing the Outlines
Darkening parts of the outline
Charcoal Self Portrait, by Jaeha
Describe how you made this work of art and what you learned through the process.
First of all I made the grid so I could exactly know where to put the small details. Second, I erased out the basic outlines of my face, arms, and hand. Third, I colored in some of the darker parts like my eyes with a charcoal pencil. I then shaded the hair and the other darkest parts. Then I finished of with detailed shading.
I learned that charcoal has a similarity with using normal pencil but also very different. The fact that we are using only charcoal to shade both lighter and darker places was very new to me. The grid method really gives a change because the grid shows you where to put small details like where the shade should be located or where the eye should be drawn.
